Intercultural tour
Tour programThis tour does not take you to familiar or known places, but to the almost deserted abandoned settlements of southern Albania where we are guaranteed not to meet strangers, or hardly meet them.
Departing from the accommodation in the morning, our journey takes us between rugged peaks and beautiful olive groves, to a settlement on the picturesque Kardhiq mountain.
Our first stop is to visit the remains of the castle built by the Zenebish family in the 14th century.
Then, in the neighboring settlement, we will see how the Christian and Muslim societies were separated during the Ottoman times.
The former life of the village, which currently has 15 permanent residents, comes alive before us, when children from surrounding villages also attended the local school and it was a bustling center. A resident who was born here and once lived abroad for many years but has moved back will share more interesting facts with us, along with a homemade raki and wine tasting!
As we continue our journey, we will have the opportunity to fill our bottles with spring water and buy herbs. Continuing on, we reach the historical region of Laberia, which is famous for the Church of St. Mark, which dates back to the 13th century and is an outstanding example of medieval Albanian Orthodox church architecture.
The settlement is also famous for preserving ancient traditions, and here you can also find many old buildings that characterize traditional Albanian culture.
We then continue along the area formed by the Vjosa, the river that originates in the Pindos Mountains and flows southwest through Albania, finally flowing into the Ionian Sea.
Our next stop is the ruins of the castle of Ali Bey, a family of Kelcyra who was an important figure in the history of the region located in southern Albania. The influential family had significant power in the area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
From the ruins of the castle, a wonderful panorama opens up to us of the Vjosa Valley.
On our way, the town of Përmet is the next stop where we will visit the church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This is an important religious building in Albania, so it has many historical and cultural implications.
To end the day, we will have dinner in one of the authentic restaurants in the town.
Return to the accommodation in the (late) evening.
The tour is a full day.
